Dreams to Goals to Reality

To be successful we need to combine our dreams with reality. The reason that so many people do not live their dreams is because of the approach they use to articulate and set their goals.

When setting goals, consider your life holistically. You do and you are. Take a few moments to consider your dream life: What does it look like? Are you spending time with the people you love? Involved in activities you enjoy? Are you getting value from your time? How are you feeling? Are you happy? Are you energetic? Are you kind? Are you friendly? Are you alone? Are you with friends? Are you with family? Be holistic in the articulation of what you want your life to look like. Also remember that no one dream life is greater than another. Dreams are personal! One of my dreams to achieve minimalism may be so bizarre to a collector but this is mine and that is theirs- and that’s ok. If no one desired to provide healthcare, what would the ill do? If no one had a passion for technological advancement then things that are so commonplace to us like computers, Whatsapp or the Internet may not exist. Take another moment to really think about the questions above.

So now that you have spent a few moments considering your dream life, think about setting goals that will help you towards getting there. But before you do that, there are a few things I would like you to note and consider when setting out your goals:

1. Don’t be afraid to fail

Set goals you would really like to achieve, which will lead you towards that life you desire. Do not think about what you can do now or what you have now. Just set your goal! Consider this: ten years ago, I would have laughed at my former self, not only for setting out to travel in Asia , but for having the audacity to do it on my own, and more so for leisure not work. I still set the goal to visit Thailand and guess what? With time, the dream materialised. What does your heart truly desire?

2. How many goals?

Too many goals at the same time may be overwhelming, so give yourself focus: no more than two or three goals at any point. Allow yourself the time and effort to achieve success without burnout.

3. Analysis is paralysis

Don’t spend time overanalysing why you could fail. Transfer that energy to analysing how to ensure success. You don’t need to know the answers to every question right at the beginning. Your future will change because of the decisions you make and these will dictate the success of your journey.

4. Have a clear destination

Be clear of who you would like to become and what you would like to achieve. Be able to visualise and describe what this end goal looks like.

5. Goals are long term

Once you set a goal you will either look at it at completion date and tick it off your list, or you will cross it out and formulate a new one. Goals are something that you will view and review. The goal itself may evolve, and that’s okay.

6. Be committed to your goals

Don’t just write off a list of things that you may want to do. Your goals have to be something that is burning inside of you. You need to be committed to seeing them to fruition. You need to be dedicated to their attainment. Identify a ‘why’ and this should be greater than any excuse you can muster to lose focus.

7. You will need to change

The reason you are currently not living your dream or achieving that goal is because there is something that you are currently not doing in your life my dear and changes will have to be made.

Change, like exercise, may cause you a bit of pain to start with. But with time, you build muscle, you become stronger, and eventually, this routine that once caused you pain becomes your new norm. But don’t settle there- begin a new routine that will again bring you a different pain, build you new muscle and make you stronger. Remember each growing pain sets the foundations in your process and brings you even closer to your goal, and before you know it…..goal achieved!

8. Fail to plan and plan to fail

Setting goals is not an end in itself. Plan out what you need for attainment of your goal. What do you need to do to achieve your goal? What do you already have? Who can help towards the goal attainment? What do you need to develop? If you don’t answer some of these key questions, you might find yourself not progressing in the way that you would like to.

9. Take Action

If you don’t do anything about your goal, you are not going to move forward and progress. Break the goal down to actionable steps and get moving.

10. You are totally worthy

Don’t think that whatever you desire is just for the Jones’ next door, you too can work and put things in place to get you closer to achieving your goals. You are capable and deserving! Look in the mirror and tell that person that looks back at you that they deserve to live the life they imagine. They deserve success in their endeavours. Be confident enough to believe that you deserve to succeed!
